About Out to Learn Willow
Out to Learn willow is run by willow artist Mel Bastier. We specialise in training adults and children in the traditional craft of willow weaving, using dried and living willow.
We design and build beautiful structures and sculptures to enhance school grounds, gardens and community areas.
We also take on bespoke projects to suit individual requirements. These include full design service with working drawings, recommended if you are a little unsure of what would suit your project.
We have created many large scale sculpture installations including commissions for: Six Coronation Arches, a gift to the Queen from the Royal Windsor Rose and Horticultural Society installed on the Long Walk outside Windsor Castle; BBC Studios Llandaff, film set for ‘Class’, new production of Dr Who series; Royal Horticultural Society, BFG sculpture celebrating Roald Dahl 100 at the RHS Shows in Cardiff, Tatton Park and Harlow Carr; giant bee sculpture for RHS Shows 2017 Cardiff, Chatsworth, Hampton Court, Tatton Park and Harlow Carr; RSPB Cymru, giant swift sculpture, 2018; Royal Horticultural Society Wisley Garden, T-Rex sculpture, 2018.
In addition to building willow structures and helping groups to develop their outdoor spaces we offer a range of workshop style courses. They are suitable for schools, community groups or anyone interested in learning the traditional art of willow weaving with both living and dried willow.
Our courses are run throughout the year at a variety of venues in South Wales. We advise early booking as the courses tend to book up quickly.
See Willow Courses for details of forthcoming courses.
We hold current DBS checks and have full public liability insurance of £5 million
